I am happy to announce that, on Saturday, March 26th 2011, my doctor father, Professor Dr. Kurt Geihs from Germany will visit the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and give a presentation on the work currently going on in my former research group, the Distributed Systems Group at the University of Kassel. The group recently started the large-scale joint project "Design of socio-technical networking applications in situative ubiquitous computing systems". The talk will be on "Model-driven Development of Self-Adaptive Systems" and will probably be interesting for quite a large audience here at the School of Computer Science and Technology.

The main focus of this presentation is on self-adaptive applications in ubiquitous computing environments. Such applications react to dynamic context changes at run-time and adapt their behavior in order to provide a situation-aware service to the user. We present (1) a model-based development methodology for self-adaptive applications, (2) an adaptation middleware that supports the self-adaptivity of the applications, and (3) proof-of-concept applications that demonstrate the viability and effectiveness of the approach. Then we will give an outlook to a new research project which aims at an inherently interdisciplinary development process for ubiquitous computing applications that not only satisfy the functional requirements but also comply with user requirements in respect to usability, trust, legal regulations and so on. Finally, we will briefly present another research area that also deals with run-time adaptivity, i.e. team-play for autonomous soccer robots. While the particular adaptation requirements of this latter application domain are quite different from general ubiquitous computing, nevertheless many synergies can be exploited between the domains.

Prof. Kurt Geihs is a full professor in the EECS Department at the University of Kassel (Germany). His research and teaching interests include distributed systems, communication networks, and software technology. Current research projects focus on self-adaptive context-aware systems, collaborative autonomous mobile robots, and management of service-oriented computing. He coordinates a large interdisciplinary research cluster on the "Design of Socio-Technical Networking Applications in Situative Ubiquitous Computing Systems". He has published more than 125 refereed articles and is author / co-author / editor of several books. Before joining the University of Kassel he was professor at TU Berlin and University of Frankfurt, and researcher at the IBM European Networking Center in Heidelberg. He spent sabbaticals at IBM Research in Hawthorne (USA), Microsoft Research in Cambridge (UK), and University of Pretoria (South Africa). He holds a PhD from RWTH Aachen, a M.Sc. from UCLA, and a Diplom Degree from TU Darmstadt, all in Computer Science. His recent publications include [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, d44, d49].
